Military Aircraft, Airborne early warning

Carrier-based early-warning aircraft had a large radar to detect aircraft or ships; some could also control interceptor fighters defending the fleet. This kind of airborne warning and control system (AWACS) airplane appeared in land-based air forces to detect low-flying enemy raiders and direct interceptors toward them.
